I knew immediately…

I enjoy observing the liturgical calendar. It’s a practice that falls under the larger affinity of spiritual disciplines. Unfortunately, in my largely overwhelmed adult life, I often think nothing of the important dates on the calendar until they actually come around. The result of this is that, despite enjoying spiritual disciplines and wanting to come up with something to give up for Lent each year, Ash Wednesday usually comes, startles me as it arrives, and goes without me having put any thought into it lately.

This year I caught it ahead of time though. And I wanted to come up with something really thoughtful, really meaningful to give up for Lent since I’d missed it for the last few years.So I began thinking, and the very first thing that came to mind gave me such a visceral reaction that I literally said out loud, “I hate it.”

And that’s when I knew what I was giving up for Lent this year…

Unfortunately, it falls into a peculiar category of things where saying it kind of defeats the purpose, so it’s a secret.
